WINTER POSES EXTREME DANGERS TO YOUR PETS!!!

KITTEN SAVED TOOK SAFETY UNDER THE ENGINE OF A CAR
Cold weather poses special risks for pets, such as running out of water (frozen over or power outages) and increased pain from arthritis. Winter dangers aren't just about the cold temperatures.
Keep yourself informed on other potential hazards seen in winter such as antifreeze and deicer toxicity, and get tips on how to be pet-prepared for winter storms and power outages.

Winter Hazards for our pets

Winter is now upon us and in many of our states it can be extreme. Here are a few tips to remember to ensure a healthy season. As most pet lovers know, winter can be a challenge, and some common dangers to watch for, and what to do to avoid problem.

This is actually a winter and summer potential problem. Cats and dogs are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze, and will often sample some if left out in a container or spilled on the garage floor.

Antifreeze is highly toxic - it is rapidly absorbed (initial signs appear approximately one hour post-ingestion), and there is a high mortality rate. Other sources of this deadly chemical are: heat exchange fluids (sometimes used in solar collectors), some brake and transmissions fluids as well as diethylene glycol used in color film processing.
A safe alternative to Ethylene Glycol antifreeze is available, it is called propylene glycol, and while it does cost a small amount more than 'regular' antifreeze, it is worth the piece of mind.

OUTSIDE PETS IN WINTER!

If you feel it is too cold outside, it is too cold your dogs or cats. Some pets however, do live outside in wintry climates. Extra care must be taken to ensure your pet survives the low temperatures, wind chills, and moisture (rain, sleet, snow) of winter.
If your pet is housed outside, make sure that adequate shelter is provided -- to shield from wind, moisture, and cold. Position the shelter so the opening is not in the face of the prevailing winds. A drape or door also helps, extra blankets help alot.  Take extra care to ensure that your pet is comfortable and can get into and out of their housing easily.

Pets need to have fresh water at all times

#1 Tip - Water: Make sure the water is not frozen during this time of year. Contrary to what some people think, animals do not know how to break the ice. (OK, some may have learned this trick, but they are in the minority).  Heated pet bowls are a great solution.

#2 Tip - Food consumption, please make sure that your pet dog or cat always have more food intake in the winters.  This helps keeps the metabolism on an increase and helps with warming the body.

Thankfully, dogs and cats do not need much electricity in their daily lives. Fresh water and food are most important, so basic emergency precautions should cover those needs. If your pet is arthritic and cold weather is a concern, have plenty of padded, thick blankets for your dog or cat keep them warm at all times.

Unfortunately many of our best friends, dogs or cats are in tragic circumstances.
Abused, neglected and or abandoned many will suffer tragic ends to their life if not properly cared for during the winter months.  If you see a pet suffering outside, do something, possibly call a "No Kill Shelter", they can and will help in emergency situations.  Take blankets, food and water to keep them warm and nourished, until help can come.  Maybe just maybe take them into your home foster them until they can be relocated to a Safe Haven, vetted and made available for adoption.
